National Spelling Bee
National Spelling Bee News - 2010-2011 - Registration for the National Spelling Bee is currently open, and after registering, the new study list is available for schools. Last year, there were 225 words for all grades (1st thru 8th). This year, these have been entirely replaced with 450 new words for grades 1 thru 8. They are identified by grade with about 100 words for each grade and the same overlapping of words. (i.e. half the 4th grade words were on the 3rd grade list and the other half of the 4th grade words are on the 5th grade list, and so on.)
Hexco has been producing products to help students prepare for The National Spelling Bee since 1982. Hexco's spelling products are grouped into two categories, Annual and Advanced. Annual products change every year with the official spelling list published by Scripps. Advanced products are updated about every 5 years and contain words that are likely to be seen in the later rounds of the Bee. Mastering these esoteric words distinguishes a "champion" from a "really good speller."

Written Round Readiness
Prepared for spellers bound for Washington, each Written
Round Readiness is a set of 3 tests with 50 words each designed in the format of the computerized test given at the 2009 National Bee. For each word, the computer speaks the pronunciation while showing definition, parts of speech, a sentence, and word origin on the screen. A student then enters the spelling and continues to the subsequent word. A companion booklet lists the words in each test so that a student may keep up with his or her problem words and
study the printed list. The written round contains words that run the gamut on difficulty levels from fairly easy to very esoteric. Remember, this is that critical round which hones the field to those advancing to rounds shown on national TV. In 2009, only 41 out of 293 spellers (14%) advanced past this round to Round 4 in D.C., ultimately eliminating 86% of the competitors. Scoring is determined by a speller’s composite score for the first 2 oral rounds, plus the critical written round.

Hexco's Personal Spelling Coach Program - Now enrolling for 2010-2011 School Year
This program establishes goals based on your student's individualized needs after an initial assessment period. Weekly assignments are given and require 1-2 hours a day of student study, plus one-on-one quizzing lasting an additional 1-2 hours a week, with the coach, via telephone. In addition to using Hexco products, our coach uses Spelling Made Simple software which allows students to customize their own word lists using The Spelling Rules Books, New Nat's Notes, and Verbomania.
Our coach has been developing and editing products for Hexco for the past several years in addition to homeschooling her own children and coaching them on to the Nationals. She is dedicated to helping each child become successful while keeping parents in the loop by providing feedback and offering suggestions about how they too, can participate in the learning process.
This program requires dedication on the part of everyone. Please call for further information to determine if this program is the best option for you and your student. Space is limited. References are available.
