What to Look for in a Spelling Bee Coach

What makes Hexco Spelling Coaching different?

When families begin looking for spelling bee coaching, they quickly discover that there are many options. We know there are other coaches, and we also know that no coach alone can create a champion. Spellers are supported by parents, teachers, mentors, study resources, and their own hard work. At Hexco, we respect that.

What makes Hexco different is not flashy promises. It is experience, structure, ethics, and a deep respect for the speller’s journey.

For more than 40 years, Hexco Academic has supported serious spellers with trusted study materials and resources. In fact, 39 National Spelling Bee Champions have used Hexco products. Our coaching program builds on that foundation, with Michelle Horton leading personal spelling coaching since 2008.

Michelle brings a rare combination of firsthand spelling bee experience, teaching skill, and encouragement. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Secondary Education, and her own children reached the National Spelling Bee finals. Over the years, she has also helped many Hexco students grow into top competitors, including students who have gone on to achieve success at the national level.

Our philosophy on coaching

We often think of the coach as a navigator. A coach can provide a roadmap and serve as a compass, helping a speller focus on the study paths that bring the strongest results. The speller is the one learning, studying, practicing, and competing. The coach helps point the way, reduce wasted effort, and create a more organized path forward.

That means we never try to take too much credit for a student’s success. Every spelling achievement belongs to the speller who earned it.

That same philosophy shapes the way we do business.

Some coaching programs charge not only coaching fees, but also a percentage of a student’s winnings. Hexco does not.

When a speller wins, we are honored to have played a role in the journey, but the accomplishment and prize money belong to the student whose dedication made it possible. Hexco does not take a percentage of winnings; we charge only for coaching.

Hexco coaching also goes beyond simple word memorization. Michelle’s approach helps students build a real foundation through Latin and Greek roots, spelling patterns, word origins, study strategies, and competitive stage techniques. Her coaching is organized, personalized, and positive, giving students the tools to become stronger and more confident at every stage of the spelling journey.

In the end, the best coaching does more than prepare a student for the next word. It helps the speller build confidence, strategy, and long-term skill.

At Hexco, we are proud to guide that journey.
