Atlanta NHB '18 - What you need to know

Gearing up for your regional National History Bee event? Here’s where to begin.

Regional Finals 2018

The Basics

New to the National History Bee? Learn more about what to expect at your regional event in my post from last year.

What’s New

Seasoned competitor back for another round? One significant change has been implemented at the 2018 regional events. In previous years, competitors have been quizzed by a History Bee representative during buzzer rounds. For this year’s regional events, a digital moderator has been implemented. In other words, questions asked during the buzzer rounds are now pre-recorded by a voice actress. These sound bites are played for competitors in lieu of a live moderator. This ensures that pronunciation is clear, accurate, and identical across the board in each room of the buzzer rounds.

National Finals

The Basics

Already qualified for the National event? Congratulations! The 2018 National History Bee and Bowl championships will be held in Atlanta, Georgia, at the National History Fair. We will have a table set up at this event and hope to see you there!

Check-in kicks off on Thursday, May 31st at 3 p.m., and the championship rounds of the bee are scheduled to begin on Saturday, June 2nd at 1 p.m. You will likely have a little downtime during your stay in Atlanta. I love this city and would highly recommend visiting the Atlanta Aquarium if you have the time. For my history buffs, which I'm assuming we all are, Atlanta has a lot to offer.

What’s New

In previous years, subject exams on topics like Military History and Geography have been offered during the national event. No subject exams will be offered during the 2018 National Finals.

Outside of that, the only significant change will be the addition of the new audio moderator integrated into the regional buzzer rounds (see above).

How to Prepare for Regionals and Nationals

Good luck and fast buzzing!

Best,
